Coming up on almost 20 years of living on a 100% plant based diet, I view the circumstances that led to that change as the luckiest series of events that have ever happened to me, but sadly, good people had to die (colon cancer) to open my eyes.
What I later learned was that almost all of the top ten causes of premature death are related to the foods Americans eat most.
Quickly after adopting my new diet my lifelong allergies all disappeared, I lost 35 lbs, felt better, had energy all day, even slept better. My only competitive sport at the time was downhill ski racing (still is at 67) and being leaner and stronger was a good combination for success on the slopes.
I still had one health issue plaguing me, even 8 years into the new diet and that was lifelong chronic back pain. I tried going gluten free just as an experiment and to my surprise my back issues vanished, never to return.
I am on a quest to understand how the human body works, and more importantly, what things are health enhancing, and what things are health damaging. The whole food, plant based living keeps me feeling young and allows me to pursue all sorts of sports and activities that have made my retirement years extra enjoyable.
This is why I am involved in the PBHC, a like-minded group with some very smart people. We can all learn from the experiences of others, even those just getting started on the plant based journey.
